The Music Of Memphis

Memphis is one of those musicals that are instantly acknowledged for their combination of original music, innovative concept and rare authenticity of performance. The show is based on the narrative of how a white music disc jockey named Huey Calhoun comes to Memphis and enters into an era-defining musical collaboration with Felicia Farrell, a black singer. Calhoun helps Felicia get her R&B music on the radio and things start falling in place as their relationship takes a romantic turn and help usher in the Rock n' Roll era in the mid-1960s.The Broadway reception of the show at Shubert Theater was magnificent and critics were equally quick to back it up with some great reviews, applauding the performance as a whole. The Musical was a huge success right from the time it was premiered at the North Shore Music Theater in Beverly, Massachusetts in 2003-04 season. Later, Memphis enjoyed successful innings at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego and 5th Avenue Theater, Seattle, Washington in 2008-09.The Cast And The Concept The musical is originally based on the concept developed by Joe DiPietro.

 

It features a few outstanding numbers by David Bryan which helped raise the musical to new heights altogether. Energetic choreography by Sergio Trujilo and soul-stirring performances by Chad Kimball as Huey Calhoun and Montego Glover as Felicia Farrell go a long way to ensure that the musical stands out for its sheer charisma and ingenuity. Cass Morgan stands out in her performance for the natural ease with which she slips into the shoes of Huey's mother.
